Results from a randomized controlled trial evaluating SiteSmart® were published in Diabetes Therapy, providing independent clinical validation of Montmed’s patented injection site rotation solution. The study demonstrated that the sole dispensing of SiteSmart® by retail pharmacists resulted in a statistically significant improvement in injection site rotation compared with conventional pen needles (p=0.00546), delivering a 134.7% increase in the likelihood of improving site rotation behaviors.
The trial enrolled more than 200 adults using insulin and further demonstrated that SiteSmart® can transform the utility of a pen needle from a commodity delivery device into a clinically valuable tool that supports adherence to a key diabetes care recommendation. Additional findings showed a 25% reduction in pen needle reuse among SiteSmart® users, while pharmacists participating in the study reported substantial increases in confidence and engagement when counseling patients on proper injection site rotation.
The peer-reviewed publication represented an important milestone for Montmed, establishing a strong clinical evidence base for the SiteSmart® platform and supporting its adoption by healthcare professionals, industry partners, pharmacies, and people living with diabetes. SiteSmart® remains the only pen needle system clinically proven in a randomized controlled trial to improve injection site rotation behaviors.
